Mercedes driver George Russell lost a chance at victory at the Mexico Grand Prix due to energy deployment problems and a collision with Isack Hadjar. Toto Wolff expressed frustration over the recurring reliability issues that contributed to Russell finishing behind Kimi Antonelli.

Energy deployment issues derail victory attempt

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted the team let George Russell down at the Mexico Grand Prix after an energy deployment issue ruined his bid for victory. Russell started on the front row alongside Lewis Hamilton at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. His initial getaway allowed him to take the polesitter’s slipstream, but the Silver Arrow encountered a technical problem on the first straight. This issue caused him to drop to sixth by the time he reached Turn 1. Wolff told media that the energy delivery is not what the team thought it should be. This situation repeats a pattern of mechanical trouble for the driver, who previously faced energy deployment issues at Spa-Francorchamps that led to a collision with Hamilton. He also suffered power unit failures that caused retirements in Canada and Malaysia. I find it frustrating that Mercedes continues to struggle with the same reliability problems that hinder Russell’s race pace. Antonelli remains more efficient with engine management, as he often uses less throttle in medium-speed sweeps compared to Russell.

Collision and FIA fine

The afternoon grew more difficult when Russell collided with Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. He failed to back out and tapped the Red Bull driver, which resulted in a 10-second penalty that eventually dropped him behind Lando Norris; he was in sixth place by the time a red flag stopped the race after Valtteri Bottas crashed heavily. Russell’s race performance was poor compared to his season opener victory in Melbourne. After the chequered flag, the 28-year-old driver congratulated Kimi Antonelli for his title but left the track without attending media sessions. Mercedes excused him from these duties because he was "distraught about the situation," which resulted in a €5,000 fine from the FIA. Wolff told reporters that he has known Russell for a long time and understood why he left. He stated that if Russell had stayed, it would have surprised him. This incident in Mexico follows a season where Russell’s performance fluctuated, including a struggle at the Italian Grand Prix where he started second behind Pierre Gasly. The race was also chaotic for Ferrari, where the stewards handed Leclerc a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, which allowed Max Verstappen to win the race by 0.799 seconds over Hamilton.

Comparing the Mercedes teammates

Kimi Antonelli secured his world title by finishing third, making him the youngest champion in history at 20 years and 68 days old. He won nine races this season while Russell won three. Antonelli has 16 podiums compared to 8 for Russell. Antonelli has seven poles compared to five for Russell, and his median average gap in Q3 is 0.185 seconds. The points gap between the Mercedes teammates remains large. Antonelli has 380 points, while Russell has 250 points. This leaves Russell 130 points behind his teammate. Russell currently lies fourth in the championship, trailing Max Verstappen by 11 points and Lewis Hamilton by nine points. He remains five points ahead of Charles Leclerc.

Driver Team Points Wins
Kimi Antonelli Mercedes 380 9
Max Verstappen Red Bull Racing 261 0
Lewis Hamilton Ferrari 259 0
George Russell Mercedes 250 3

Russell posted a message to Instagram on Monday evening to discuss his emotions. He wrote that the season started how he hoped but unraveled with tough luck and poor performances. He stated that 2026 was not meant to be his year. The driver expressed his desire to rediscover the performance he has been capable of producing. He also noted that he has scored fewer points than he did at this stage last year. He acknowledged the team produced the best car and power unit this season.
