Antonelli secures 2026 title in Mexico

Kimi Antonelli secured his place as the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history on Sunday at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Italian driver finished third behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton to clinch the title with four rounds remaining in the season. This performance follows a dominant campaign in only his second season in the sport, during which he won nine races and finished on the podium in every race except one.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised the driver following the race in Mexico. Wolff stated that the notion of a driver being "selfish, opportunistic, ruthless for your own benefit" has died. He said Antonelli represents values such as "humility, integrity, loyalty, respect" and should be a role model for "the few entitled ones in Formula 1" who act as "the endless moaners on the radio, the ones that complain, the ones that crash."

Lando Norris said the driver "made everyone look silly" and deserved his success. Norris noted that Antonelli has beaten his teammate George Russell throughout the entire season. Franco Colapinto observed that Antonelli sat between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen on the podium, describing him as the world champion between the two best champions of recent years. Gabriel Bortoleto added that the driver did not break under the pressure of leading the championship from almost the start to the end.

Mercedes struggles with reliability and driver performance

While Antonelli celebrated, Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin admitted the team failed George Russell during the same race. Russell started second on the grid but suffered a battery deployment failure on the run to Turn 1. This electrical issue caused him to lose several positions immediately. Russell later received a 10-second penalty for spinning Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. Shovlin said, "We didn’t give him the start to the race that he needed, and that is on us as a team." Despite these problems, Russell finished in sixth place.

Antonelli managed his race through a specific tyre strategy that Shovlin praised. The driver used the soft compound rubber for an opening stint that lasted longer than 40 laps. Although a red flag on lap 45 neutralized the advantage gained from this strategy, Antonelli restarted in fourth place and passed Charles Leclerc to take third.

Driver Race Result Reason for Result
Max Verstappen 1st Race winner
Lewis Hamilton 2nd Podium finisher
Kimi Antonelli 3rd Secured 2026 World Championship
George Russell 6th Battery failure and 10-second penalty

The driver responds to early season criticism

The 2026 championship comes after a difficult period for Antonelli during his rookie season last year. He struggled with results during the European summer, which led to questions about Mercedes’ decision to place him in the seat vacated by Hamilton. Antonelli admitted that those difficult moments helped him mature. He said that experiencing low situations and high-pressure moments made him much more ready for this year.

Antonelli also noted that racing directly for Mercedes under the spotlight helped him grow faster than racing for a smaller team. He said he enjoyed the ability to "shut off some of the noise" from critics who claimed he did not belong in Formula 1. He described the current success as "just the beginning" and expressed his desire to continue fighting for championships alongside Verstappen and Hamilton in the future. Mercedes now looks toward the Sao Paulo Grand Prix to attempt to secure the Constructors’ Championship.
