Ocon dropped after Mexico City dispute

Haas permanently dropped Esteban Ocon from its 2026 driver lineup. The team replaces the Frenchman at this weekend’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix with 21-year-old Brazilian rookie Rafael Camara, who holds a contract with the team for 2027. This decision follows a dispute during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend where Ocon challenged race engineer Laura Mueller regarding tyre strategy and the run plan he received during Friday’s second practice session. While Ocon admitted a "difference in viewpoints" led to a discussion with the parties involved, he issued a statement to categorically reject any reports or allegations suggesting that any form of physical violence was used to resolve any differences of any nature. L’Equipe reported the meeting between Ocon and team principal Ayao Komatsu ended abruptly, perhaps even physically. Ocon, who completed 198 Grands Prix since his debut in 2016 and secured one race victory, now faces a difficult path to a race seat for 2027 because Racing Bulls and Cadillac reportedly show no interest in him. Ocon participated in Friday’s second practice session in Mexico and intended to remain in the car for the rest of the weekend, but Haas unexpectedly announced on Friday morning that Hirakawa would take his place. The Japanese veteran also participated in the first practice session and drove Ocon’s car. This sudden change occurred after the heated exchange between Ocon and Mueller.

Komatsu defends team decision

Komatsu refuses to provide specific details regarding the clash and says the conversations remain an internal matter. "Such decisions are never made lightly, as was the case in Mexico City – but then, as now, we feel this is firmly in the best interest of the team moving forward," Komatsu said on Tuesday. "The conversations that ultimately unfolded between the team and Esteban remain an internal matter, and we will continue to respect the private nature of closed-door situations." I consider the team’s sudden dismissal of a driver with 198 Grands Prix and a race victory after a single disagreement to be an incredibly harsh way to manage a veteran driver. The 30-year-old Frenchman previously announced he would depart Haas at the end of the season, but this sudden removal means he will no longer compete on behalf of the team in the 2026 championship. He currently seeks a reserve drive to stay relevant in the paddock as he looks for a seat in the 2027 season. Ocon’s lack of options remains compounded by reports that Racing Bulls and Cadillac show no interest in the Frenchman.

Camara debut and season remainder

Camara drives the VF-26 alongside teammate Ollie Bearman during his debut at Interlagos this weekend. The Ferrari junior leads the Formula 2 championship and previously won titles in Formula Regional European Championship and Formula 3. Haas chose Camara because he excelled in a Testing of Previous Cars outing in August. "We know Rafa’s capabilities and we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the team this weekend and working with him through his Formula 1 debut driving the VF-26 in Brazil," Komatsu said. This weekend allows for an earlier debut than the team originally planned because the Japanese reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa must compete in the World Endurance Championship at Monza, where he can win the title for the third time. Hirakawa scored a point in his Mexico debut when he finished P10 after several post-race penalties to rival drivers. Haas has not confirmed who will drive the final two rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, though Camara contends for the F2 title, Hirakawa remains a likely candidate for those races. The 21-year-old Brazilian has several years of experience in the junior formulae. His arrival at Interlagos follows the team’s decision to replace Ocon with Hirakawa in Mexico.
