Lando Norris takes 20th career pole at rainy Brazilian Grand Prix

Lando Norris secured his 20th career pole position at the Brazilian Grand Prix, beating George Russell by 0.204 seconds in a session that lasted two and a half hours. The Interlagos qualifying was defined by torrential rain that triggered an 84-minute delay after Q1 was red-flagged with 15 minutes remaining on the clock. Track marshal Bernd Maylander declared the conditions "not drivable" due to high-speed aquaplaning risks from standing water. Norris mastered the wet track in his McLaren to claim his third pole of the 2026 season, completing a hat-trick at this circuit. Kimi Antonelli joined him on the front row, inheriting the second spot after Russell’s penalty.

Engine drama reshapes the starting order

Lewis Hamilton will start from the back of the grid after Ferrari replaced his entire power unit following issues in FP3. He initially faced a 10-place penalty for taking a fifth internal combustion engine but reported "strange vibrations" and smoke in the cockpit during practice. Ferrari confirmed they removed the unit for checks and decided to fit a new one, forcing a rear-grid start. Max Verstappen also begins at the rear after moving to a fifth ICE, turbocharger, and exhaust, accumulating a 30-place penalty that exceeds the 15-place limit. Charles Leclerc drops 10 places for a fresh ICE, while Russell serves a five-place drop for a sixth ICE. These moves promote Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg to a shock second row.

The chaotic session saw several drivers eliminated in Q1, including Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly for Alpine. Gabriel Bortoleto crashed at Juncao and broke his rear wing, ending his day early. In Q2, Oscar Piastri failed to progress to Q3 with a time good enough for only 12th place. Rafael Camara advanced to Q2 in his debut but crashed into the wall at Turn 12, causing another red flag. Fernando Alonso reached Q3 for the first time this year in his Aston Martin, setting the ninth-fastest time. Russell expressed frustration over team radio after being told to abort his final lap due to traffic behind Albon. He claimed he was on a "P1 lap" despite finishing second.

Norris described it as a "great qualifying" where avoiding mistakes was paramount. The weather remains a factor for Sunday’s race, which starts at 5pm GMT. Mercedes can secure the constructors’ title if they outscore Ferrari by three points or more. This would be their first teams’ championship since 2021, following Antonelli’s drivers’ title win in Mexico. The Brazilian GP has signed a five-year extension to remain on the calendar until 2035. Stefano Domenicali stated that Brazil is an important part of F1’s history and future. The grid penalties significantly alter the competitive landscape for the final stages of the season. Drivers must navigate both the wet conditions and the strategic implications of their engine changes. The outcome of Sunday’s race could determine the ultimate team champion.
