George Russell delays Mercedes engine penalty until Las Vegas
George Russell will postpone a grid penalty for a new Mercedes power unit until the Las Vegas Grand Prix to avoid overtaking difficulties in Austin. His teammate Andrea Antonelli holds a 102-point lead over Russell with six rounds remaining in the 2026 championship season.
A strategic delay
George Russell will wait until the Las Vegas Grand Prix between November 20 and 22 to take a grid penalty for the Mercedes upgraded power unit. He previously took a penalty in Singapore because a power unit failure in Malaysia required an engine change. Mercedes will use the FIA Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system to introduce a new engine specification. While the team expected to deploy this upgrade at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Russell told Sky Sports F1 that he prefers to choose slightly easier tracks to overtake at. I find this decision logical because a grid drop in Austin would have hindered his ability to catch the leaders.
Championship implications
The championship gap makes this penalty irrelevant to the title fight. Russell trails his Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 102 points with only six rounds remaining in the 2026 season. Antonelli could secure his maiden title in Austin if he wins the race while Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. You should realize that Russell is already mathematically unlikely to win the championship. If Russell starts from his normal position, the title battle will likely extend into Mexico or Brazil. Will the championship fight reach Brazil?
Mercedes performance issues
Mercedes faces performance issues. The team introduced an upgrade package in Malaysia that failed to provide the expected performance levels. Red Bull dominated the last two weekends, with Max Verstappen winning in Singapore. Antonelli finished on the podium after overtaking Lewis Hamilton, and he has eight wins this season compared to Russell’s three. He told Sky Sports F1 that he aims to improve the car because Red Bull has been best recently.
