Toto Wolff rejects Helmut Marko claims about George Russell
Toto Wolff defended George Russell against Helmut Marko's claims that Kimi Antonelli has taken the Mercedes number one driver spot. Wolff argued that Russell retains championship talent despite car performance issues and a fifth-place penalty during the United States Grand Prix.
Toto Wolff rejected claims from Helmut Marko that George Russell has lost his status as the Mercedes number one driver. Marko stated that Kimi Antonelli has "quite clearly taken that spot" from Russell and expressed doubt that the Briton will ever receive another chance at a world title or number one status. Wolff responded to the comments by calling Marko his "Austrian not so buddy" while insisting that he is wrong about George. Wolff argued that Russell has all the ability to win a championship but suggested the Mercedes car does not suit him. He noted that it is difficult to cope when a driver feels a season is theirs only to have a wunderkind chip away at that position. Wolff suggested that if the team provides a quick car in a new season, it is absolutely possible for Russell to succeed. He pointed to Russell’s previous successes in F2, F3, and back-to-back European karting championships to argue that his talent remains. Wolff told the media that Russell is a champion who merits being in the group of the very best drivers. He also noted that when the car lands in the way that suits him, Russell is fine, but the driver struggles more than Kimi when the car drops out of that operational window.
The US Grand Prix penalty and race results
The United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas saw Russell finish eighth after receiving a five-second penalty from FIA stewards. This penalty followed an incident on the opening lap at Turn 12 where Russell ran wide while attempting to overtake Isack Hadjar. The FIA stewards reviewed footage, positioning data, and evidence from both teams before deciding on the mitigated sanction. They determined that Russell left the track and gained a lasting advantage at Turn 12. The stewards decided to reduce the standard ten-second penalty to five seconds because Russell was challenging Isack Hadjar, which allowed Oscar Piastri to close in and put the Mercedes driver under pressure.
Russell described the penalty as "a bit ridiculous" as well, but that was the least of his worries after such a bad weekend. He explained that his pace was poor in the first stint, but he matched the pace of Kimi Antonelli for six laps after switching to hard tyres. Russell expressed frustration because his progress halted after he caught Piastri. He also noted the difficulty of the weekend, as his victory in Azerbaijan was the only exception in a string of underwhelming performances.

Championship battle and car performance
The performance gap between the Mercedes drivers remains a concern for the team. Wolff stated that the car’s operational window is narrow and that the team must work to understand why there is such a difference in performance. He said that Russell is not three-tenths or half a second slower than Kimi, so the team must modify the car or the setup to help him go fast. This performance issue became evident in Austin when Russell struggled to make progress after starting sixth. He mentioned that he needs to dig deep with his team to understand why he is so far off.
Antonelli’s victory in Austin brings him closer to the 2026 title, as he only needs two points from the remaining five races to secure the championship. Antonelli arrived in Austin with the opportunity to secure the title if Russell finished ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finished outside the top four. Because Russell finished eighth and Hamilton finished fourth, the championship is not yet settled. Antonelli has nine wins this season, whereas Russell has three. While Antonelli dominates the standings, drivers such as Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen continue to challenge for position in the standings. Russell earned four points for his eighth-place finish.
