The engine penalty at Interlagos

George Russell will lose five places on the grid for Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. Mercedes decided to switch the driver to a sixth internal combustion engine following power unit failures in Canada and Malaysia. Because Russell already exceeded his initial four-unit allowance in Singapore, this additional engine only costs a five-place penalty. I find the timing logical since the team has not confirmed if the new ADUO engine upgrade will debut before the season ends. Russell told Mercedes social media channels that the team felt Interlagos was a good place to take the penalty. He mentioned Lewis Hamilton’s 2021 recovery from 20th to fifth as an example of managing a big penalty at this circuit. This marks Russell’s second grid penalty in four races, following a 60-place drop in Singapore. He required those changes after a power unit failure at the Bahrain GP in Malaysia. Russell expects the 2026 power unit changes and slight tyre tweaks to help him next year.

A struggle with reliability

The 2026 season has been a nightmarish campaign for Russell, who currently sits fourth in the standings. He trails Kimi Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and Lewis Hamilton. His reliability has been a major problem, as he suffered race-ending faults in Canada and Malaysia. Russell told reporters that only six races this season had no issues. This means 14 of the 19 races involved technical setbacks. He told media members that he felt "exhausted" by the constant need to pick himself back up. He said with a wry smile that he was hoping to pick himself back up maybe twice in the season, not every other weekend. Russell finished sixth at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, where he missed a chance to challenge for victory because of problems outside his control, and he told reporters that the relentless nature of his season was a "really tough pill to swallow." He believes the 2026 power unit regulations punished his natural driving style. He also said he has had more good years than bad years and must maintain his "mental resilience" to return to positive ways.

Russell qualified second in Mexico and had a chance to attack for the lead at Turn 1, but another issue outside his control prevented him from capitalizing. He told engineers he reviewed every race this season to understand the pattern of failures. I believe his assessment that the complexity of the power units caused these issues is accurate, as Pierre Gasly also faced similar issues. Mercedes received a €5,000 fine in Mexico because Russell left the circuit without facing the media after Antonelli secured the championship with a third-place finish. Lando Norris outpaced Antonelli by 0.082 seconds in the opening practice session in Brazil.

Championship standings in Brazil

Mercedes targets the constructors’ championship this weekend. The team must outscore Ferrari by three points or more in Brazil to secure the title. Kimi Antonelli, the youngest world champion at age 20, already secured the drivers’ title in Mexico.

Position Driver Team Points
1 Kimi Antonelli Mercedes 380
2 Max Verstappen Red Bull Racing 261
3 Lewis Hamilton Ferrari 259
4 George Russell Mercedes 250
5 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 245
6 Lando Norris McLaren 221

Russell has four races remaining to climb the standings. His last victory came at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku in mid-September. He needs to overcome his recent disappointment in Mexico to find form again. Toto Wolff said the team focus has moved to Sao Paulo to finish the job. The team wants to execute strongly from the first session to bring home both titles this season. Russell is currently trailing Max Verstappen with 261 points and Lewis Hamilton with 259 points.
