Ferrari promotes Dino Beganovic to reserve driver for 2027
Ferrari will promote junior driver Dino Beganovic to a reserve role for the 2027 season to assist with simulator duties. Meanwhile, Haas has signed Formula 2 leader Rafael Camara to a multi-year deal to replace Esteban Ocon starting in 2027.
Beganovic moves to reserve role
Ferrari has made the decision to promote its junior driver, Dino Beganovic, to a Formula 1 reserve driver role for the 2027 season. The 22-year-old Swedish-Bosnian driver will work alongside Antonio Giovinazzi and handle heavy simulator duties. Beganovic will support development during race weekends and stand ready to drive the SF-27 if a primary race driver cannot compete. He has spent seven seasons in the Ferrari Driver Academy after winning Italian and Swedish karting championships, taking second in the WSK Euro Series, and finding success in early career karting. In the 2025 and 2026 Formula 2 seasons with DAMS, he finished seventh in 2025 and fifth in 2026, including three victories with a pair of wins in Madring and Baku that demonstrated his race-winning credentials. He also worked as a test driver for Scuderia Ferrari during his time climbing the junior single-seater ladder.
Beganovic previously finished third as a rookie in the 2020 Italian Formula 4 Championship. He won the Formula Regional European Championship title on his second attempt in 2022. During his two seasons in Formula 3, he finished sixth in the championship standings in both 2023 and 2024. Beganovic, who finished sixth in the Formula 3 championship standings during both 2023 and 2024, will move away from full-time racing to focus on his heavy simulator duties and development tasks for the Scuderia.
Camara joins Haas
Rafael Camara, the current Formula 2 championship leader, will join Haas on a multi-year deal starting in 2027. The 21-year-old Brazilian replaces Esteban Ocon, whose departure from Haas at the end of the current season was confirmed in September. Camara won the Formula 3 championship last year and is expected to partner Oliver Bearman, although Haas has not confirmed Bearman’s 2027 seat. Bearman joined Haas in 2025 and remains on the Ferrari books. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu expects to finalize the extension with Bearman very soon.
Ayao Komatsu dismissed the idea that the Haas squad is a "Ferrari B-team" after the team confirmed the signing of the second academy driver. He and owner Gene Haas choose drivers themselves and face no pressure from Ferrari to take academy talents. Because of the relationship between the teams, Komatsu noted that the team used its relationship with Ferrari to test Bearman in Mexico in 2024 and Camara in Portimao with the TPC program. He said that while both drivers are fast, they are "Haas F1 team drivers" and the team has no obligation to take anyone from Ferrari. He added that the suggestion of being a B-team is "just not even a starter." Komatsu also noted that Camara showed potential during his testing in Portugal by demonstrating more than raw speed.
Academy shifts in the junior series
Tuukka Taponen will move up from Formula 3 next year after he finished third in the 2026 standings. Taponen earned three podium finishes during the final two rounds of the season to secure his third-place result, having not achieved a single top-three finish prior to those rounds. Taponen’s performance in the final two rounds of the season allowed him to jump from having no podiums to finishing third in the championship.
This academy movement leaves Beganovic and Camara as the two graduates moving on from Formula 2. While Camara and Beganovic leave the category, Tuukka Taponen will remain in the feeder series next year. Gene Haas expressed optimism that Camara can make an immediate impact, noting the trajectory of Oliver Bearman who outperformed the more experienced Esteban Ocon in both of his seasons at the team.
