Toto Wolff rejects bias claims regarding Kimi Antonelli
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff dismissed accusations of driver bias after Kimi Antonelli holds a 102-point lead over George Russell. Antonelli can mathematically secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at the United States Grand Prix if he outscores Russell by 23 points.
Wolff rejects bias claims
Toto Wolff called people making accusations of bias towards Kimi Antonelli "lunatics." The Mercedes team principal rejected suggestions that the squad tilts resources toward the Italian driver, who holds a 102-point lead over George Russell in this year’s championship. Wolff said he has always tried to be balanced and transparent with his drivers, noting that his approach dates back to his time at Williams. He told reporters that when he was a rookie, he asked Alain Prost why the relationship between him and Ayrton Senna went so wrong, prompting Prost to say drivers felt the politics were against them two months after being the "flavour of the month." Wolff said he took it as a challenge to keep things balanced, noting that managing the relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg from 2013 to 2016 was not easy. He described his relationship with Russell, who has been part of the Mercedes set-up since age 17, as one of compassion and emotion, noting that they spend time together at the gym or having coffee with Carmen and Susie. Because he has worked with Antonelli since the driver was 11, Wolff says the talent is an integral part of the team. He said that people can think what they want, but the integrity in that respect is important to him and the drivers know it.
Mathematical path to the championship
Antonelli is on track to become the youngest Formula 1 champion in history if he manages to secure the title at the Circuit of the Americas. He can mathematically secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at the United States Grand Prix on October 25 if he manages to outscore George Russell by 23 points. For this to happen, the Italian driver must win the race, Russell must finish no higher than ninth, and Lewis Hamilton must finish no higher than fifth. This gap has fueled online debate over whether Mercedes is tilting its resources towards the Italian driver. Wolff told Sky Sports that while AI might suggest the probability of an Antonelli win is "almost 100%", he prefers a "race by race" approach because accidents can cause things to stress. He also said that scoring more points than Lewis Hamilton is good, though the team did not expect to be ahead of him because the Mercedes drivers were fast. This mathematical scenario means the title fight remains active heading into Austin, but a dominant weekend from the teenage sensation would seal the championship before the final stretch of the season. The championship remains contested as the paddock moves to Austin.
