Mark Walter seeks $3 billion for Cadillac F1 team stake
Mark Walter is seeking $3 billion for his stake in the Cadillac Formula 1 team as seven parties show interest. Despite the high valuation, the team faces a projected $400 million first-year loss and remains at the bottom of the constructors' championship without scoring a point.
Bidders circle the team
Mark Walter, who controls the Cadillac F1 operation through TWG Global, seeks a price of $3 billion for the team as at least seven parties circle the stake he holds. While TWG Global stated last month that "TWG is not considering exiting its stake in the Cadillac Formula 1 team or any other part of TWG Motorsports", the owner is looking to sell. This move follows Walter’s recent sale of a 12.8 per cent stake in Chelsea Football Club and the LA Lakers for $12.5 billion, which he sold just a year after buying them. F1 team values rise annually, with the other ten teams being valued at $3.42 billion on average last year, which represented an increase of 48 per cent from the previous year.
| Project Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Target Sale Price | $3 billion |
| Dilution Fee Paid | $450 million |
| Total Startup Investment | $1 billion |
| Projected First Year Loss | $400 million |
Poor performance and financial strain
Cadillac faces a difficult period on the track and in the bank. The team sits bottom of the constructors’ championship because they have not scored a single point. This poor performance follows the mid-season removal of team principal Graeme Lowdon, who Marcin Budkowski replaced. The team also has not confirmed its driver lineup for 2027, though Sergio Perez signed a new deal and Valtteri Bottas faces an uncertain future despite reportedly signing a multi-year contract. The team is on track to lose $400 million, as one-time startup costs and the commercial business side still get up to speed. The team’s financial situation is grim.
TWG Global runs the Cadillac team in partnership with General Motors. The two parties paid a $450 million dilution fee before they invested a further $1 billion to get the project going. This struggle matches their performance on the circuit where they are the only entry yet to score a point. Because they lack points, they remain at the bottom of the championship. The team still has to confirm its driver lineup for the 2027 season.
