Lewis Hamilton directs Ferrari development for 2027 F1 challenger
Lewis Hamilton is providing technical feedback to Ferrari engineers to optimize the 2027 chassis and aerodynamic package. While working on future performance, Hamilton finished fourth at the United States Grand Prix after struggling with understeer issues.
Hamilton works on 2027 development
Lewis Hamilton says Ferrari is at a "pivotal moment" regarding the development of its 2027 F1 challenger. The 41-year-old driver works in the background to steer the car in the right direction by providing feedback to engineers who design the chassis and aerodynamic package. This process began approximately one month ago, and Hamilton now makes decisions on specific areas where the team loses performance. He tells the team where to improve the chassis and aero balance to ensure the car retains its strengths while rectifying small, subtle differences. Hamilton told media that if the team can somehow get closer to the Mercedes and Red Bull power units, they will be fighting for wins in the races. He continues to push for developments at Maranello to help him secure a record-breaking eighth Drivers’ title. He points out where the team can improve the chassis and the aerodynamic package, while the engineers work to improve the engine for next year. He identifies specific areas where fixing issues could provide half a tenth of a second in every corner. He also aims to maintain the good things currently on the car while correcting the subtle differences. He says he must decide, "Okay, these are the areas we’re losing."
Technical struggles at the United States Grand Prix
Hamilton struggled with significant understeer during the opening two stints of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas. This issue stemmed from an incorrect set-up direction during Friday practice, which left him unable to challenge Max Verstappen for the final podium position. Ferrari mechanics added four clicks of front wing at each of Hamilton’s two pit stops, but the Briton explained that he still felt he remained another four clicks short of the balance he needed. This lack of front-end grip, combined with a poor qualifying performance, left him in fourth place behind Charles Leclerc. Leclerc translated his fourth place on the grid into a second place finish, while Hamilton turned fifth on the grid into fourth. A late Virtual Safety Car denied Hamilton a chance to attack Verstappen for third. Ferrari kept two sets of medium tyres for Hamilton because the team expected the hard compound to be ineffective. In reality, the hard tyre was the best tyre for the race, and the decision forced Hamilton to start the grand prix on a used set of soft tyres. This decision cost him two seconds of race time compared to drivers on new rubber. Hamilton nearly reached third place during the start, but Leclerc occupied the outside line to block the move. Hamilton noted that he would have been in the fight all the way to the end if he had possessed the balance seen in his final stint.
Championship standings and chassis performance
The SF-26 holds the status of the best chassis on the grid based on GPS data from the 2026 season. While the machine excels through corners, it lacks the power to compete with the Mercedes W17, Red Bull RB22, or McLaren MCL40. Hamilton is currently third in the drivers’ standings, sitting eight points ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, as he remains in a tight fight for second place alongside George Russell, Max Verstappen, and Leclerc, with only nine points separating the four drivers. Kimi Antonelli will likely secure the championship in Mexico City this weekend if the Mercedes driver maintains his current form. Hamilton remains mathematically able to win the title, although the points gap makes it difficult. The driver focuses on extracting maximum performance from the current SF-26 and prepares for the upcoming regulations. The season reaches its conclusion with the following remaining races:
