Imola faces November 9 deadline for potential season finale

Paddock rumors and team bookings

Imola faces a Monday, 9 November deadline to learn if it will host the final Grand Prix of the season. Some paddock sources deny that this specific date has been selected for an announcement. Uncertainty over the season finale has lasted for months. Formula 1 teams already booked hotel rooms in the Italian region because they expect the season to conclude at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Behind the scenes, the teams received assurances that they would not have to travel to Qatar on 29 November or Abu Dhabi on 6 December.

I find the lack of official confirmation from FOM messy because they have not changed the calendar. FOM holds the current schedule because canceling Middle East events would threaten to cost the commercial rights holder significant revenue. The war in the Middle East cast doubt over the Grands Prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. I think the situation is a mess. The teams were told they would not need to travel, yet the official calendar still lists the Middle East races. The teams expect to be in Italy by the end of November. The teams are ready for an Italian conclusion.

FIA status and race schedules

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, said last week that the safety of drivers, team members and officials is not currently at risk. He also said the FIA is prepared for a possible calendar change. The decision has been postponed several times in recent months. The point when clarity would emerge was initially mid-September, but the expected deadline shifted to mid-October and that date also passed without an official announcement. The FIA is currently maintaining the existing schedule for the time being.

Abu Dhabi remains officially the final race of the season. Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the safety of drivers, team members and officials is not at risk, though he noted the FIA is prepared for a possible calendar change if the Middle East situation changes. I think the repeated shifting of dates from mid-September to mid-October is a failure of planning. I find it disappointing that clarity has not emerged after so many months of waiting.
