Russell falls in championship standings

George Russell fell to fourth in the drivers’ championship standings following the Mexico City Grand Prix. He currently sits on 250 points, which places him 11 points behind Max Verstappen, who has 261 points, and four points behind Lewis Hamilton, who has 259 points. Kimi Antonelli clinched the title in Mexico, winning nine races this season while Russell secured only three wins. Russell started the year as the championship favorite, but he watched his teammate, the Italian Kimi Antonelli, become the youngest Formula 1 champion in history. Russell started second to Lewis Hamilton in the Mexico race, but a loss of power on the run to the first corner due to an electrical power-unit failure ruined his chances. This specific technical issue caused him to be swamped by the field and led to a collision with Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull at Turn Six. The collision earned Russell a 10-second penalty. He and his engineers analyzed the season and found that they only had a clean weekend in six of the 20 races. Russell noted that 14 of the weekends involved issues, many of which occurred on his side of the garage. He said that having issues in three quarters of the season felt incredibly unfortunate.

Mental exhaustion and the need for reflection

The Mercedes driver admitted he feels mentally exhausted after a frustrating 2026 season. He told media members in Interlagos that he must have a "deep, deep look in the mirror" to understand why he lacked pace. He said, "It wasn’t meant to be this season but you also need to look at yourself in the mirror and think: ‘What could I have done better?’" He questioned whether his recent struggles stemmed from pure misfortune or if they involved things in his control, as he expressed that he felt he was constantly being kicked to the ground and having to pick himself back up. He told reporters that he had hoped to deal with such setbacks only twice during the season instead of every other weekend, especially after losing a chance for a podium in Mexico due to a failure outside of his control. He also said he was very upset with missing the chance for a good result in Mexico, which made missing his press duties feel even worse. He described himself as a true professional 99% of the time, but he admitted that missing the press was still not ideal. He added that Brazil is a place he loves because of great memories from his first Formula 1 win in 2022, but he did not come to the race with high expectations.

Brundle defends media absence in Mexico

Martin Brundle defended Russell for skipping his FIA-mandated media duties after the race in Mexico, and Mercedes received a €5,000 fine because the team authorized the absence while the governing body did not. Toto Wolff appeared happy to pay the fine for the 28-year-old driver. Brundle told Sky Sports News that he does not blame Russell for avoiding the press, calling the situation "a step too far." Brundle noted that Russell congratulated Antonelli and his family underneath the podium before leaving the circuit. He argued that it was too much for a driver to face questions like "Is this the end of the road for you?" while at his lowest ebb. He also said that F1 drivers receive more access than players in any other sport could dream of. Russell, who waited at Williams for a long time to get into a works Mercedes team, might feel "broken" because Antonelli transformed from a bit of a liability in his first year to a generational talent in his second. Brundle told Sky Sports News that he would be happy to pay a fine to avoid having a driver "face the music" to the world when they are at their lowest. He also noted that Antonelli had his own share of unreliability and dropping out of races throughout the season.
